Oidhche Shamhna sona dhuibh uile!
Happy Halloween to all the spooky Scots (and nots) out there! These carvings may look a little unconventional, but turnips were the preferred carvings of Scots for many years! Sharing roughly the same shape and dimensions of a human head, turnips were carved to create “tumshie lanterns”, which were believed to ward off malevolent spirits.
In fact, many of the traditions we practice today, such as wearing costumes, trick or treating, and bonfires were all rooted in ancient fears and practices to assuage evil spirits. For example, costumes were worn to confuse spirits into believing you were another evil ghoul. Trick or treating stems from offering a gift to the cursed souls that haunt during the witching hour (The hour preceding midnight). This would help ensure the spirits passed your home.
Halloween has become an international celebration of the scary side of life. Whether you are a believer in the traditions, or simply enjoy watching happy children visiting your door each year, we hope you have a fabulous Halloween!
